What to Expect During Your Dental Whitening Appointment

Teeth whitening is a great option if your teeth have become stained or dull. Even healthy teeth can discolor over time due to factors like aging, genetics, antibiotics and tobacco use. Whitening treatments are an easy way to brighten your smile and boost your confidence. Before proceeding, your teeth and gums will be evaluated to check they’re suitable for the procedure. At your dental whitening appointment, our teeth whitening dentist will:

  1. Evaluate your oral health: Assess the overall condition of your teeth and gums. Based on your oral health status, we'll determine the best whitening approach for you.
  2. Discuss your whitening goals: Review your desired outcome for the whitening treatment and discuss your daily oral hygiene habits for lasting results.
  3. Assess your risk factors: Evaluate your susceptibility to common oral health problems like staining, sensitivity or enamel damage.
  4. Inspect existing dental work: Check the condition of any crowns, veneers or other restorations you have to ensure the whitening treatment will be effective and consistent across your smile.
  5. Take X-rays if needed: Capture dental X-rays to detect any underlying issues that could impact the whitening results.

Teeth Whitening FAQ

What factors contribute to tooth discoloration?

Tooth discoloration can result from aging, genetics, diet (especially acidic or pigmented foods and beverages), tobacco use, certain medications and poor oral hygiene. Over time, enamel can wear away, exposing the darker dentin beneath.

How does professional teeth whitening work?

Professional whitening treatments typically use a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide than over-the-counter products. Agents break down surface and enamel stains, safely brightening your smile for faster, more dramatic results.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with teeth whitening?

While professional whitening is safe, some individuals may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. Effects usually subside within 24-48 hours. It's essential to have a professional evaluation to check the health of your teeth and gums beforehand.

How long do the results of professional teeth whitening last?

Results can last anywhere from several months to a few years, depending on lifestyle factors such as diet, tobacco use and oral hygiene habits. Touch-up treatments can help maintain a bright smile for longer periods.

Can teeth whitening be done for those with dental restorations like crowns or veneers?

Teeth whitening treatments do not affect dental restorations like crowns, veneers or fillings, as the materials are not porous like natural teeth. If whitening is done, the natural teeth will lighten, and you may need to discuss replacing any restorations to match the new shade of your teeth.

Dr. Kumar is absolutely amazing! I have Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is horrible if you have to go to the dentist, but my experience was absolutely wonderful! When I walked into the office I had tears in my eyes and Candy and McKenzie were extremely warm and assuring that everything would be okay, and offered nitrous oxide to keep me calm! I took them up on it!!!!! Dr. Kumar was extremely kind and he worked incredibly fast! I will never go to another dentist! They have a client for life! Thank you everyone who helped me!!!!!!
