Common Reasons for Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry helps patients relax during dental procedures, making it ideal for patients with anxiety or discomfort. Here are some common reasons sedation is recommended:

  • Managing Severe Dental Anxiety: Sedation offers a way to help calm nerves and allow patients to undergo treatments without stress.
  • Comfort for Complex or Lengthy Procedures: It’s especially helpful for patients undergoing procedures that take more time, like multiple fillings, tooth extractions or root canals.
  • Reducing Discomfort for Those with Sensitive Gag Reflexes: Sedation helps prevent discomfort in patients who might have trouble tolerating certain dental tools or procedures.
  • Managing Discomfort in Invasive Treatments: Sedation is frequently used for more invasive procedures like dental implants or bone grafting to alleviate anxiety and pain.
  • Helping Patients with Special Needs: Sedation can provide a more comfortable experience for patients who require extra care or assistance during treatment.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

  • Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas, is a mild sedation promoting relaxation and reducing pain sensitivity. Safe for most patients, it wears off quickly after treatment with oxygen, leaving you alert and able to drive home.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation (OCS) offers deeper relaxation than Nitrous Oxide, helping patients stay calm and drowsy during treatment. While able to stand, walk or answer questions, many patients have little memory of the procedure afterward, making it ideal for those with dental anxiety.
  • Intravenous Sedation (IV) is used for shorter treatments, providing immediate effects that may make you feel as though you slept through the procedure. Afterward, you may feel groggy, but the effects will fade within a few hours. IV and Oral Conscious Sedation require a ride home, as sedative effects may last up to 24 hours.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry

  • Patients with Dental Anxiety
  • Individuals Undergoing Complex Treatments
  • People with Sensitive Gag Reflexes
  • Patients with Special Needs
  • Individuals Needing Multiple Procedures

Important Things to Know About Recovering From Sedation Dentistry

  • Rest is Essential: Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after the procedure.
  • Need for a Driver: Arrange for someone to take you home, as sedation can impair coordination.
  • Possible Grogginess: You may feel drowsy or groggy for a few hours after sedation.
  • Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from heavy physical activity until the sedative effects fully wear off.
  • Follow Care Instructions: Adhere to post-procedure care guidelines for the best recovery.

What to Expect During Sedation Dentistry

During sedation dentistry, your dentist will assess your needs and administer the appropriate sedation method to help you relax throughout the procedure. While you remain calm, the dental work is completed and after the treatment, you may feel groggy and will need a driver to take you home.

  1. Initial Consultation: Your dentist will assess your health, discuss sedation options and recommend the best method for your procedure.
  2. Sedation Administration: Depending on the type (oral, nitrous oxide, IV), sedation will be given to help you relax.
  3. Monitoring: The dentist or staff will monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure to maintain comfort and safety.
  4. Treatment: While you remain relaxed, the dentist will perform the dental work, which may feel like it happens quickly.
  5. Recovery: Afterward, you may feel groggy or drowsy. A driver will be needed to take you home and recovery time depends on the sedation used.

Dr. Kumar is absolutely amazing! I have Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is horrible if you have to go to the dentist, but my experience was absolutely wonderful! When I walked into the office I had tears in my eyes and Candy and McKenzie were extremely warm and assuring that everything would be okay, and offered nitrous oxide to keep me calm! I took them up on it!!!!! Dr. Kumar was extremely kind and he worked incredibly fast! I will never go to another dentist! They have a client for life! Thank you everyone who helped me!!!!!!
