Dental Retainers in Northern Kentucky

What Are Dental Retainers?

Dental retainers are an essential part of comprehensive orthodontic treatment, typically used after braces or aligners to maintain the results of tooth movement. After removing braces, retainers help prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Consistent retainer use and regular follow-up appointments with your orthodontist are key to preserving a straight smile and an even bite over time. Proper retention care provides long-lasting orthodontic results.

Retainers We Recommend

Heritage Dental Center will provide you with the retainer option best suited for your orthodontic treatment plan. There are a few distinct types of retainers our orthodontists recommended:

  • Clear Retainers – A removable, transparent plastic tray fitting over your teeth.
  • Traditional Retainers – A removable appliance made of acrylic with a wire positioned on the front side of your teeth.
  • Bonded Retainer – A thin, fixed wire attached to the lingual (tongue) side of the anterior teeth.

Are Retainers Necessary?

Yes, retainers are necessary after orthodontic treatment to keep your teeth in their new positions. Without them, teeth can gradually shift back to their original misalignment, potentially undoing the progress made during braces or aligner treatment. Wearing a retainer as directed by your orthodontist helps maintain the results of your treatment.

Best Candidates for Retainers:

  • Individuals who have had their teeth straightened using braces or clear aligners like Invisalign.
  • People who want to prevent their teeth from shifting back to their original misaligned state after treatment.
  • Those who are committed to wearing a retainer regularly as directed by their orthodontist to preserve their smile.
  • Patients who have had a significant amount of tooth movement and need a retainer to provide long-term results.

What to Expect During Your Orthodontic Retainer Appointment

Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, your retainer helps preserve your newly aligned teeth. Here’s what to expect during your retainer appointment:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your orthodontist will evaluate your teeth and discuss your treatment progress to determine the best type of retainer for your needs.
  2. Impressions or Scans: Custom impressions or digital scans of your teeth will be taken to create a secure and comfortable retainer.
  3. Fitting the Retainer: Once your retainer is ready, your orthodontist will check if it fits correctly, making any necessary adjustments.
  4. Instructions for Use: You'll receive guidance on how to wear, clean and care for your retainer, including how often it should be worn to maintain your results.
  5. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular check-ups will be scheduled to monitor your progress and make adjustments to your retainer as needed for optimal results.

Retainer FAQ

How long do I need to wear my retainer after orthodontic treatment?

The duration varies by individual, but generally, retainers should be worn full-time for the first few months after treatment, followed by part-time wear (usually at night) for several years or indefinitely to maintain results.

Can retainers fix minor tooth movement after treatment?

Yes, retainers can help correct slight tooth shifts over time, but if there has been significant movement, additional orthodontic treatment may be required.

What should I do if my retainer becomes uncomfortable or doesn’t fit properly?

If your retainer feels tight, painful, or doesn’t fit correctly, contact your orthodontist immediately for adjustments or replacement.

Can I eat or drink with my retainer in?

It is not recommended to eat or drink with your retainer in, as food particles can get trapped, and the retainer can become damaged. Always remove your retainer before meals.

How should I clean my retainer to keep it in good condition?

Clean your retainer regularly by gently brushing it with a toothbrush and lukewarm water, or use a retainer cleaning solution to remove bacteria and odors. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.

Dr. Kumar is absolutely amazing! I have Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is horrible if you have to go to the dentist, but my experience was absolutely wonderful! When I walked into the office I had tears in my eyes and Candy and McKenzie were extremely warm and assuring that everything would be okay, and offered nitrous oxide to keep me calm! I took them up on it!!!!! Dr. Kumar was extremely kind and he worked incredibly fast! I will never go to another dentist! They have a client for life! Thank you everyone who helped me!!!!!!
