What to Expect During Your Custom Mouthguard Fitting

Heritage Dental Center specializes in providing custom mouthguards designed to protect your teeth, whether you're dealing with nighttime grinding (bruxism) or engaging in sports. Here's a 7 step-by-step overview of what you can expect during your custom mouthguard fitting:

  1. Evaluate Your Oral Health: Before we begin, our dentist will perform a thorough evaluation of your oral health. This includes an assessment of your teeth, gums, jaw alignment and any existing dental restorations (like crowns or fillings). We’ll also check for signs of bruxism (teeth grinding) or other issues that may require a custom night guard or sports mouthguard.
  2. Discuss Your Protection Needs: Whether you need a custom mouthguard to prevent teeth grinding at night, or a mouthguard to protect your teeth during contact sports, we’ll explain the different options. We’ll also ask questions about your habits—such as how often you grind your teeth, what sports you play and any discomfort you may be experiencing with your current mouthguard (if applicable).
  3. Take Impressions of Your Teeth: To create the perfect custom-fit dental night guard or sports mouthguard, we’ll take an impression of your teeth. Using a soft, comfortable material, we’ll mold your upper and/or lower dental arches to capture every detail. This impression will serve as the blueprint for crafting your custom night guard or sports mouthguard to ensure it fits securely, and comfortably and provides maximum protection.
  4. Custom Fabrication of Your Mouthguard: Once we have your impressions, our team will create your custom-fit dental mouthguard. We’ll carefully craft the mouthguard to the exact specifications of your teeth so it fits snugly and provides the protection you need.
  5. Final Fitting and Adjustment: When your custom mouthguard is ready, you’ll return to our office for the final fitting. We’ll check that the mouthguard fits properly and comfortably, making any necessary adjustments for a perfect fit. It should feel snug but not tight, with no discomfort. We'll make sure you can speak and breathe easily while wearing it, whether it's for nighttime use or during sports.
  6. Instructions for Care and Maintenance: After your custom night guard or sports mouthguard is fitted, we’ll provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for and maintain it. Proper care is essential to prolong the life of your mouthguard and ensure it remains hygienic. We’ll show you how to clean it after each use and how to store it safely when it’s not in use. We’ll also discuss how long to wear it (e.g., overnight for a night guard or during sports activities) and the importance of replacing it when necessary.
  7. Follow-up Appointment (If Needed): In some cases, we may schedule a follow-up appointment. If you have any issues or discomfort, we will make any necessary adjustments.

Mouthguard FAQs

How Often Should I Get a Professional Mouthguard Fitting?

Mouthguard fittings should be done annually or as needed, especially for custom night guards or sports mouthguards, particularly if there are changes in your dental structure.

Does Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Custom Mouthguards?

Many dental insurance plans cover custom mouthguards, particularly for teeth grinding or sports, but coverage varies, so it’s best to check with your insurance provider.

What Types of Custom Mouthguards Are Available?

Custom mouthguards include night guards for teeth grinding, sports mouthguards for injury prevention, and dual-purpose guards for both sports and bruxism protection.

Are There Any Side Effects to Wearing a Custom Mouthguard?

Side effects are rare, but some discomfort may occur initially, especially with night guards, which usually resolves as the mouthguard adjusts to your teeth.

Can a Custom Mouthguard Improve My Smile?

While custom mouthguards don’t whiten teeth, they help protect your smile by preventing damage from grinding or sports injuries, maintaining tooth integrity over time.

Dr. Kumar is absolutely amazing! I have Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is horrible if you have to go to the dentist, but my experience was absolutely wonderful! When I walked into the office I had tears in my eyes and Candy and McKenzie were extremely warm and assuring that everything would be okay, and offered nitrous oxide to keep me calm! I took them up on it!!!!! Dr. Kumar was extremely kind and he worked incredibly fast! I will never go to another dentist! They have a client for life! Thank you everyone who helped me!!!!!!
